2012 Trends in Resort and Swimwear

1. Betsey by ViX (US$176)
You’ve probably noticed tons of colorblocking on the runways, in the fashion mags and pretty much everywhere you look.  For the 2012 summer, colorblocking is hitting the swimwear industry hard.  If you’re not brave enough to rock the traditional bold colorblock styles, try a more subtle approach in classic black and white hues.

2. Kalahari by Despi (US$134)
This summer you’ll notice that your favorite animal print swimwear styles have been redone in fun new hues.  Whether you prefer an animal print swimwear style with a subtle splash of color or something that’s as colorful as a box of Crayola crayons, this trend will definitely get you noticed.

3. Eyelet Shorts by PilyQ (US$136)
This year, crochet is popping up in both swimwear and cover-ups.  Styles done in crochet knit are not only chic, but they also have some amazing textural qualities.  Look for tops with crochet racerbacks, tunics with delicate crochet trim and even adorable short shorts all featuring the season’s easy-to-pull-off trend.

4. Fringe Black by L*SPACE (US$126)
Looking for something to bring out your bohemian side?  Look no further than fringe—my favorite 2012 swimwear trend!  Fringe is accenting bandeau tops, halter tops, one-pieces and cover-ups.  Without a doubt, this trend will bring the boho-chic out of any fashionista!

5. Sleek Cayenne by Vitamin A Swimwear (US$164)
A new year means a brand new color trend, and for 2012 orange is a must for swimwear.  Pantone calls the “it” color “tangerine tango” but you can call it whatever you want!  Whether you go for spicy cayenne oranges or soft peachy hues, there’s a shade of orange out there for everyone.

6. Cheetah-Licious by Beach Bunny (US$229)
Like crochet, lace is another one of those trends that lends some amazing texture to swimwear.  In addition, a little lace can add a sense of delicate femininity to any look.  This season you’ll see lace accents in bikinis, tunics, shorts and more.

7. Crochet Crop Top by diNeila Brazil Swimwear (US$135)
Crop tops?  Yes, please!  When shopping for swimwear cover-ups, many ditch the dresses and go for a simple top and pair of shorts.  Instead of playing it safe with a tank or tee, switch to a crop top that shows a hint of skin.  Prepare those abs for swimwear season, ladies—2012 is the summer of the midriff!

8. Onyx Network by Becca Swimwear (US$130)
The LBB (AKA little black bikini) is by far the most classic swimwear look.  But this season, the LBB is getting a makeover!  Instead of your classic triangle tops and tie-side bottoms, look for a LBB featuring a one-shoulder strap, crochet racerback design, single-tie bottom and more.  Mix and match to create your perfect LBB look.

9. Dora by Melissa Odabash (US$219)
Last but not least, ponchos are back and better than ever this season.  Not only do they have a flattering silhouette, but they’re one of the most comfortable swimwear cover-up styles around.  Look for ponchos with fringe detail, lace-up fronts or billowy faux sleeves.  You can’t go wrong!

Which swimwear and cover-up styles are on your summer wishlist?
