Introducing Making Scents by dtse

by Vie on December 27, 2015

Imagine having perfume that matches your personality, wouldn’t that be great? Now you can have that with Making Scents by dtse. The genius behind this is Darwyn Tse that I have the pleasure knowing since years ago. This friendly and obviously sexy looking man will gladly custom-create your scent based on your personality. He created one for me and it is called “Black Vanilla”, which is very accurate since I love vanilla and I like dark art. It smells so good I only wear it for special events.

To learn more about Making Scents by dtse, I am honored to be able to have the time to do interview with this lovely man:

1.     Tell us a brief story about Making Scents by dtse?
Seeing that perfumery is a rediscovered lost art, using ingredients like essential oils, fragrance oils, tinctures, extracts and aromatic compounds, I decide to create Making Scents, an artisan perfume line made to order. I make it mission to create perfumes as “scentific” rewards for the body mind and soul. We only use the highest grades of essential oils, fragrance oils, tinctures, extracts and aromatic compounds. We do not use animal derived ingredients, that involved killing and torturing animals. All are tested on human. The perfumes are hand blended personally by me with sincerity to create unique and individual scents different from each other. Each scent is a journey in itself. The energy and intention that go into each creation is most important for Darwyn to complete a beautiful bouquet.

2.     Who should wear this? Is this unisex? Price range?
Everyone from every walks of life. It’s all sexes. Prices are idr 350.000 for 30ml bottle, idr 500.000 for 50ml bottle. Sample vials are idr 25.000 each.

3.     What makes Making Scents so special comparing to other perfume brands?
It’s something different, something you don’t see everywhere, rare and hard to find. The opposite of a mass produced designer celebrity fragrance, or what everyone else is wearing. It’s inspired by emotions. Hand crafted. Made with rare and hard to find ingredients. It’s constructed in a way that is atypical. It’s exclusive. It’s you. I believe that your fragrance is an expression of who you are, your personality, your likes and dislikes, your feelings, passions and how you present yourself to the world. You are uncommon and individual. Have you ever thought about what your fragrance says about you?

4.     How long does it normally take for you to “brew” new scent?
Depends. The actual blending and mixing don’t take very long,1-2 hrs tops. it is finding the inspiration/theme of the scent that’s unpredictable. Some took 2 days, some took 6 months, etc.

5.     Where do you get your inspiration?
Everywhere. An art work, a song, a feeling, a character from a movie or a book, a pair of dirty underwear… etc.

6.     If you could create a scent for anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would it smell like?
I have actually made a bottle dedicated to Ratu Kidul, called SA MAJESTE (Her Majesty in French)
It has notes of: Jasmine, Tuberose, Champaka, Rose, Wild Orange, Pandan Leaves, Amber and White Musk.

7.     What was the most unique scent have you ever created?
Mmmmmm, scent of a male’s crotch after a clean, soapy shower.

8.     Will you start selling Making Scents by dtse over the counter?
Dunno, I haven’t really thought of it that way. As mine is a small, home made, indie, artisan perfume brand and not manufactured. the system is, “U want? I make”

9.     Any plan to do more than just perfumery?
I would still play around perfume making, maybe in different varieties, like for instance solid perfume, scented candles, roll ons, etc.

10. How to order from you and do you ship overseas?
On line thru:
Line: makingscentsbydtse

A little biography of Darwyn:

Darwyn showed interest in the arts at very early age. At 15 he left Indonesia to continue high school at Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne. Against his father’s wish, Darwyn went to apply for a course at the Victorian College of The Arts Melbourne University in 1996 majoring in Performance & Fine Art. Darwyn was offered a lot of jobs assisting painters and artists in the theatre industries. Through it all, he picked up a lot tips and tricks from the artists and started to pay attentions in body painting and special FX makeup. In Dec 2003 Darwyn came back to Jakarta and did nothing for a year. Then in 2004, he applied for a managing editor position at one publication, hated it and decided to try his luck in the makeup industry. And Luck did come in 2005 with the arrival of MAC Cosmetics to Indonesia. He resigned from MAC Cosmetics and decided to go freelance in 2010. The rest is history. Since then Darwyn has applied makeup for many A list celebrities and has been key makeup artist to many shows, theatre and feature films such as Arisan!2, Soegija, Jakarta Love Riot, Kabaret Oriental and many more.
