The History of Shift Dress

Filed under Fashion,News, Tips & Trends

by Vie on June 4, 2013

Hey ladies, following the post before, I have something interesting to share with you! If you also agree that shift dress is this season’s must-have, then you probably would want to know the history behind this famous type of dress, and lucky for us, we have a special post about it! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy sharing it! : )
—————————————————————————————————————————————–
The shift dress is one of the most timeless women’s garments. A symbol of sophistication, maturity and style. This classic cut can be beautifully dressed up or down, and has a fit for all seasons. The basic shape of the shift dress makes it an extremely versatile design; leaving plenty of scope for a variety of fabrics and patterns.

Audrey Hepburn Dress

It was Givenchy who was first credited with the creation of the classic shift dress, having designed the iconic black number worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.  Though another story stems from 1950, when Lily Pulitzer (a New York socialite) moved to the fruit groves of Palm Beach, Florida and set up a fruit-stand. She asked her dressmaker to design and produce a dress that would help cover up the regular fruit stains that she would pick-up and so a simple sleeveless design that fell just above the knee was created in bold patterns. Soon her dresses were as popular as her fruit juices and Lily’s customers were asking if they could buy them. Lily began selling them, and when old school friend Jacqueline Kennedy wore one on in Life Magazine, the shift dress trend started throughout America.

It is thought that this shift dress design originated from the ‘sack dress’ a similar style that was redesigned from the flapper gowns of the 1920s – minus the fringing and fuss.

In 1966, London, Mary Quant was responsible for making the mini skirt shift dress a British favourite. It was worn 6-7 inches above the knee and was first modelled by supermodel Twiggy, a teen hairdresser at the time.

In the 1980’s a new form of shift dress appeared, the ‘jumper dress’ which was made from Jersey material and could be layered with a t-shirt or roll neck top and teamed with knee high socks.

Due to their narrow cut, shift dresses have become synonymous with those who have a somewhat boyish figure. The straightness of these simple gowns fit the hips tightly but fall loosely on the waist – a style that’s hard to fit an hourglass figure. Waist definition is usually added through a belt. The neckline of a shift dress is usually boat neck or scoop neck. Today’s most contemporary shift dress ambassador has to be Michelle Obama who is often seen sporting a bright shift dress teamed with an elegant cardigan.

Shift dresses can be found in both high street and designer collections, being a summer and winter staple for the younger and older woman. Recognised fashion brands known for their graceful shift dresses include: Precis, Wallis, Kaliko and Jaegar. Both plain and detailed designs are popular, from retro abstract prints to floral patterns and polka dots.

Buying vintage shift dresses is another popular fashion practice, with original 60’s designs being particularly popular to those with a more eclectic dress sense.—————————————————————————————————————————————–            This special post was written by Ms. Ellen Jones. Would You Wear Fashion Wigs?

Filed under News, Tips & Trends

Chiquel Fashion Wigs

In the 1960s, wigs were one of the most important fashion accessories a girl could have (in those times, particularly if they were big, sexy and volumous, as was the trend back then). Wigs were wardrobe staples of every woman, young and old, and they wore them with pride wherever they went.

Something happened in the 70s, 80s & 90s, where the numbers of females choosing to wear wigs as a fashion accessory, sharply declined. Wigs became synonymous with old ladies and people suffering from hair loss; less glamor, and more of a medical aid. Along with the wig-enthusiasts, the number of wig boutiques slowly declined, as wigs became a fashion staple of Halloween or dress up parties as opposed to fashionable events.

Fast forward a few decades, and 2013 appears to be the year of the fashion wig comeback. They are beginning to appear in the wardrobes of not only celebrities and fashionistas, but also every-day women. The modern girl has realized the convenience and artistic flexibility that comes with being able to create a fabulous hair style, or change of tress color, in under 10 minutes.

The New York Times even wrote a piece on how wigs have become a women’s best friend. They made mention of the fact that in today’s world where women have to juggle careers as well as family life, and look good doing it, that wigs are the most convenient way to ensure you constantly have good hair days. Another fabulous thing about wigs, is that you can be as adventurous with your color and style as you want without making that major commitment of actually chopping all your hair off or dying it bright red on a whim.

The comeback of the wig as a fashion trend probably has something to do with the fact that the quality and look of wigs are now better and more natural than ever. With a variety of wig types such as synthetic or human hair, monofilament and lacefront, or even customizable wigs, people won’t even know you’re wearing one!

Celebrities With Wigs

Celebrities such as Beyonce, Tyra Banks, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Niki Minaj are all devotees of the fashion wig. Having said that, there are many out there on the market which are affordable, so you don’t need to have the bank account of a celeb to be able to buy one! Thanks to the world wide web, they are even available to buy online. I came across a great online wig retailer, Chiquel, so next time I’m feeling the need to change my look dramatically, I may just be sporting a new do!

When I hear the word “Resort Fashion”, my mind would zoom in to tropical feeling — floral fashion, chilled, relaxed and somewhat semi-casual. But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to Oscar de la Renta’s Resort 2014. What you find here is heavy embellishments, gorgeous moderation and couture! The reason why I love this particular collection so much is the fact that you get pretty much everything — from silky feeling to detailed ornamentation, from peplums to mermaids! They are so gorgeous it’s not only show to me, it’s a fashion art packed into one amazing presentation.

So, I took the liberty to choose some of the snaps that I love and you’ll see what I mean when I said “everything is covered”

1. The Pinkies.

I’m a heavy pink fan and I’m totally head over heels for these. Not to mention the jewelry also compliment the glamorous look divinely. PS: love those belts!

2. The Blacks.

If you love  the pink, then you’re gonna love the black as well. Especially if you’re a big fan of lace and flowers. They’re just so dreamy and you won’t be able to look or think of little black dress the same way again!

3. The Plaids.
Oscar de la Renta Resort 2014

Hang all those boring office wardrobe you have and make room for these fashionable plaids because you will want to wear them every day! Whether you’re a skirt or pants kinda girl, you have to admit that this playful plaid is simply too elegant to be ignored! I personally can’t take my eyes on the first dress!

4. The Dresses.
Oscar de la Renta Resort 2014

Getting heavily dressed can be fun once in a while, especially when they look like that! That, of course if you don’t mind the strong embellishments and the figure-flattering features.
