This season, it’s time to take fashion tips from a mint humbug, a jailbird or a crosswalk – black and white stripes are the way to make a fashionable summer statement. Perhaps an unusual colour combo for this time of year, but the SS13 runway shows were mad for monochrome. Marc Jacobs debuted the trend at New York Fashion Week with his contrasting, bold mono stripes, closely followed by more of the same from Paul Smith, Diane Von Furstenberg and Moschino but to name a few.

Monochrome Dresses

The season’s monochrome trend works with just about any pattern – be it polka dot, geometric shapes or retro florals (embodied by Prada’s Mary Quant inspired pieces in Milan)- but if you’re not a fan of stripes, you may as well abandon the trend now. Be it pinstripe, zebra or Breton; the stripe is never out of fashion, so it is only natural that the monochrome variety is the print to be seen in this summer. Clean, graphic lines paired with the classic contrast of black and white give the effortlessly chic look that can only be achieved by such simplicity. Whether vertical or horizontal, chevrons or a mismatch of multi-directional stripes, black and white stripes are dominating the monochrome movement.

And, speaking of Mary Quant, an obvious nod to the swinging sixties is evident in many of the SS13 collections; from Prada’s aforementioned flower power and the graphic checkerboard designs from Louis Vuitton to Moschino’s miniskirts, shift dresses and retro sunglasses. The revival of the iconic 1960′s mod style was only to be expected with the classic pairing of black with white, a colour palette which is synonymous with the era.

Monochrome Collection

If your bank account is not well enough endowed for splurging on said ready to wear collections, fear not – the trend has hit the mass market retailers in full swing, allowing us mere mortals to shop the trend from head to toe. For the fashionably courageous, take style notes from sixties mod girls like Edie Sedgewick and Twiggy, and style a bold, mini shift dress with heavily kohled eyes and a bouffant. For a softer take on this edgy trend, a flowing, feminine maxi dress will distract from the harsh contrasts – try romantic inspired makeup and loose waves to complete the look. Mix and match monochrome by investing in separates or invest in minimalist, monochromatic accessories-the ideal way to update an LBD or a classic black skinnies and white tee ensemble for SS13.

by Vie on April 26, 2013

I’ve always been fascinated with high-low dresses. I even had that on my wedding day. Ever since I saw the November Rain video, I fell in love with it and the obsession grows from then on until now. There’s something sexy and elegant about this style. Sexy because it shows off your legs and elegant because it covers them from the back, so it’s kinda like a tease in a way, and you know how us women love to tease! ; )

There’s so much fun wearing a high-low dress, and you can never go wrong with the look — whether they are in prints, plain, casual or floral, short or maxi, it doesn’t matter,  it’s the cut that counts. And today I’m gonna show you some dresses that I’m sure you’re gonna love. What’s better, all of them are less than US$30! So get that shopping juju ready!

1. The Flower Girls.
A very typical high-low dress, especially during Spring/Summer time. They’re alluring, very comfortable to wear and it matches the season perfectly. I chose this particular trio for their pretty floral patterns and of course refreshing burst of girly colors.

My final coverage of the showcase would be about Tulola Jewelry. I was lucky to have a chance to chat with the designer herself, Ms. Sri Luce Rusna (third from the left). Looking from the uniqueness, softness and elegance of the jewelry, you will know instantly how talented, passionate and inspired this  young lady is when it comes to art and glam.

Tulola Team

Tulola jewelry was created approximately 6 years ago, the same year as the birth of Ms. Luce’s daughter. In fact, that’s where she got the name from — PuTu Lola, I thought it was really sweet and not to mention cute! I also got a chance to meet the little girl at the showcase and she was such a doll.

Tulola Tools

Based in Bali, all jewelry in Tulola are meticulously hand-made using simple yet powerful tools. So you can imagine how amazing the details are, and how careful yet gentle each finger is when crafting the jewels before transforming them into such perfection.

VieCouture Special Report: Utama Spice

Filed under Beauty,News, Tips & Trends

by Vie on April 25, 2013

Following my report on last Saturday’s event, I would like to introduce Utama Spice. When I first walked into the venue, I couldn’t help but noticing a strong herbal scent. I don’t normally go crazy over herbal but this one is absolutely different. They were actually quite refreshing and very calming. Their little showcase was located in the middle of the pathway and it immediately caught my attention.

Utama Spice

Bali is famous for its natural resources, and this inspired Utama Spice to be creative in turning them into something organic, fresh, healthy and pure. Based in Ubud, an area that’s known for its art, culture and well-being, Utama Spice was established in 1989 and incorporated in 2000. Having been in the aromatherapy industry for years along with careful researches, they manage to create only the best products from best ingredients — from body care such as soap, body butter, lotion, lip balm to essential oil and bug spray! Everything is made au natural to benefit our body (and soul).

Living in Bali, I realized that I haven’t been talking much about the fashion scene. Last Saturday, I was invited to a very special  showcase. This showcase comprised of three gorgeous presentations — fashion, jewelry and natural products. I will talk about them in 3 separate sections. Today I’ll talk about Paulina Katarina (PK), Bali-based designers that will definitely blow your mind with their chic-silhouettes.

Paulina Katarina Designers

I had a pleasure meeting Surya Paulina (left) and Ratna Katarina (right) at the event. Even though we didn’t get a chance to talk a lot but they were really nice and friendly (not to mention, very pretty!). This dynamic sister-duo has been in local/international fashion industry for years, and with their knowledge, experience and of course passion for fashion, PK was born in late 2011.

Paulina Katarina Catalog

Entering their little “gallery” of fashion, I was greeted with beautiful catalog and romantic flower display on an antique-looking wooden table. Everything was elegantly exhibited — From the well-ordered dress racks to the mannequins showcasing their latest collection. They were such a sight to see, a sweet combination of playful and sophisticated color tones. I simply couldn’t resist running my fingers through each hanger, just to feel the soft and gentle fabric.
